The 2012 Grand-Am racing season officially kicked off this weekend with the January test days at Daytona Speedway. Nearly a dozen Mustangs were in attendance, all scheduled to compete in the GS class of the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge. The No. 61 Roush Performance Mustang Boss 302R needed a strong finish and some luck at this past weekend’s Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge race at Mid-Ohio for a chance at winning the season championship. Drivers Jack Roush Jr. and Billy Johnson provided the strong finish by taking the checkered flag in second place, but luck didn’t fall their way as the leading BMW team earned enough points to win the championship.

Boss 302R Mustangs took the top two qualifying spots for this weekend’s Continental Tire Sports Car Championship race being held at Mid-Ohio. The No. 37 JBS Motorsports Boss 302R (pictured above) set the fastest lap in the qualifying session with a time of 1:31.223 with driver James Gue behind the wheel. Following close behind in second place was the Boss 302R o f Multimatic Motorsports, with Joe Foster recording a best time of 1:31.375.

Jack Roush Jr. and Billy Johnson combined to score their third victory of the season in the No. 61 Roush Performance Ford Mustang Boss 302R, winning the B+ Foundation Heroes 200 at New Jersey Motorsports Park in a race with temperatures reaching 99 degrees. It was their second consecutive dominant victory at the 2.25-mile, 12-turn Thunderbolt Raceway. Roush started third and took the lead on Lap 15. Ford has had plenty of success this year in Grand-Am’s Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge, with the Mustang Boss 302R consistently running at the top of the pack and winning several races. The most recent race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca this past weekend looked to be much of the same, with Boss 302Rs qualifying 4th and 5th. Saturday’s race didn’t go so well for the Fords, though. The Roush Performance Mustang Boss 302R added to their 2011 points total in Grand-Am’s Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge with a solid second place finish at the Road America 200 yesterday. This was the sixth consecutive podium finish for drivers Billy Johnson and Jack Roush Jr.

Joe Foster earned his second GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Grand Sport pole position of the season Friday at Lime Rock Park and will lead a 25-car GS field to the green flag in Saturday’s Memorial Day Weekend Classic. The Ford Mustang Boss 302R was consistently one of the fastest car on track at this past weekend’s Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Race at Virginia International Raceway. The No. 61 Roush Performance Boss 302R took the checkered flag on race day, narrowly beating out the BMW M3 driven by Bill Auberlen and Paul Dalla Lana.
