1965 Shelby GT350 Drag Unit sells for $350,000 at auction
Mecum held its second annual Monterey auction this past weekend, and there were more than a dozen high-quality Mustangs that crossed the block. The most notable was a 1965 Shelby GT350 Drag Unit, one of four ever built and one of only two known to exist. The GT350 drag program began much as the Cobra drag race program did: Shelby American sales representative and drag racer Don McCain approached Max Muhleman, Shelby’s director of public affairs, with the idea of campaigning a GT350 on the competitive Southern California drag circuit; Muhleman approved the proposal, and four cars were shipped to Ford drag specialist Les Ritchey’s Performance Associates for preparation.
The 1965 Shelby GT350 Drag Unit was offered for sale at the Saturday auction, and the final sale of $350,000 made it the sixth most valuable car sold by Mecum. It was also the highest priced Mustang of any auction in Monterey during the week.
